Pros

  • Close to downtown attractions and restaurants.
  • Progress has been made to revitalize the area.
  • Low housing costs

Cons

  • Vacant lots and abandoned buildings.
  • Crime rates are above average in Dallas.
The neighborhood of The Cedars in south Dallas was once a prominent community filled with ornate Victorian homes. Homes were torn down to make way for businesses and warehouses which were eventually abandoned.  Major redevelopment has and is currently taking place to convert old buildings into  mixed-use complexes, studios for artists, specialty retail, entertainment and dining uses. There is still a lot of work to be done, but the community is working diligently to have the area turned around. The new Dallas Police Headquarters has been moved here, and the entertainment complex Gilley’s has opened. Housing options are limited but there are plans for more lofts and apartments.
